Airports

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) – 5 miles from the hotel. The closest and most convenient option for domestic travelers. Direct Metro access via the Blue and Yellow Lines makes this the easiest airport to reach the Grand Hyatt.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) – 27 miles from the hotel. The primary hub for international flights and many domestic carriers. Silver Line Metro service now connects directly to downtown DC.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) – 32 miles from the hotel. Another option for domestic travel, particularly if you find better fares. Amtrak and MARC train service connect BWI to Union Station, where you can transfer to Metro.

Airport Discounts: Check your ACEC Convention registration confirmation email for any negotiated discount codes for airport parking or ground transportation.

Ground Transportation from the Airport

Metro Rail
The most affordable and often fastest option. All three airports now connect to Metro:

  • DCA: Blue and Yellow Lines direct to Metro Center (15–20 minutes)
  • IAD: Silver Line to Metro Center (45–60 minutes)
  • BWI: Amtrak or MARC to Union Station, then Red Line to Metro Center

Taxis and Rideshare
Uber, Lyft, and traditional taxis are available at all three airports.

SuperShuttle and Shared Ride Services
Shared-ride van services offer a middle ground between taxis and public transit. Book in advance for the best rates.

Travel Well & Stay Aware

Washington, DC is a vibrant, welcoming city with millions of visitors each year. Like any major urban destination, a few common-sense precautions will help ensure a safe and enjoyable visit:

  • Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night or in less populated areas. Stick to well-lit streets and busy public spaces.
  • Keep valuables secure. Don't leave laptops, bags, or electronics unattended. Use your hotel safe for passports, extra cash, and expensive items.
  • Use reputable transportation. Metro, licensed taxis, and rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are all safe, reliable options.
  • Review your route before heading out. A quick check of your map or GPS can help you navigate confidently and avoid getting lost in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation or location feels off, move to a busier, more public area.

By following these simple guidelines, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy everything the nation's capital has to offer.

D.C. Travel Tips

Plan for Extra Time
DC traffic can be unpredictable, especially during rush hours (7:30–9:30 AM and 4:30–7:00 PM) and around federal buildings. If you have off-site meetings or dinner reservations, build in buffer time.

Use Metro for Quick Trips
With direct hotel access to Metro Center, the train is almost always faster than driving or rideshare for reaching museums, monuments, and restaurants. It also eliminates parking headaches entirely.

Expect Security Checkpoints
Many federal buildings, monuments, and museums require security screening similar to airports. Bring a valid government-issued ID, check venue websites in advance for bag restrictions, and allow extra time during peak tourist hours.

Walk When You Can
May weather in DC is typically beautiful—perfect for exploring on foot. The National Mall, Georgetown, and the Tidal Basin are especially enjoyable to experience at ground level. Just remember those comfortable shoes.

Make Dining Reservations Early
Penn Quarter, Chinatown, and nearby neighborhoods are packed with excellent restaurants that fill up quickly, particularly on weeknights when conventions and business travelers are in town. Book your group dinners and client meetings as early as possible.

Check the Weather Daily
May temperatures range from the mid-60s to mid-70s, but afternoon rain showers are common. Pack a light jacket and compact umbrella. Layers are your friend.

Be Mindful of Demonstrations
Washington, DC is the nation's capital for exercising First Amendment rights. Peaceful demonstrations around the National Mall and federal buildings are routine and generally well-managed by law enforcement. They rarely cause major disruptions, but if you're walking in those areas, allow a few extra minutes to navigate around them.

Use Rideshare Wisely
Pickup points directly in front of major hotels and convention centers can have long queues. Walk one block in any direction to find faster pickup locations with less congestion.

Explore the Smithsonian Museums
All Smithsonian museums offer free admission and are within walking distance of the Grand Hyatt. If you have downtime between sessions or before an evening event, the National Gallery of Art, National Museum of American History, or National Air and Space Museum make for quick, enriching visits.

Stay Hydrated and Sun-Safe
If you plan to walk the monuments or explore the Tidal Basin, bring water and sunscreen. The distances between memorials are longer than they appear on a map, and much of the National Mall offers limited shade.
